Father’s Day is 1 week away, but don’t fret if you haven’t figured out a gift yet – here are some quick and easy homemade gifts that the kids can make (and Dad will be happy to receive!).
The personalised shirt
This is such a simple idea, but so very effective! Grab yourself a black tshirt and trace the kids hands onto contact paper. Stick the hand on to the shirt wherever you would like it to go. Pour some bleach into a spray bottle, and then lightly mist the spray over the stuck handprint. Work gradually to build up to your desired level of effect – don’t spray too much at a time or the liquid will get under the contact. Once the shirt is dry, peel off the sticky contact hand and your shirt is finished!
The BBQ plate
If you have a dad who likes to BBQ, grab a white dinner plate from Kmart or IKEA, and use acrylic paint and Sharpies to decorate! Pop it in the oven once finished and bake for 30 minutes at 180 degrees to set the paint and sharpie onto it, making it dishwasher safe. I like to hand wash, just to ensure the decoration is preserved, but you can definitely pop it in the dishwasher.
The memory maker
Have you got some Duplo or Lego bricks lying around at home? Get the kids to come up with a list of activities they love to do with Dad, and write them onto the bricks. Pop them in the jar and get the kids to decorate a special tag that explains this gift is about building memories with Dad! As they work through the bricks over time, they can build memories, and build with Lego until the jar is finished! Idea by The Seasoned Mom
The personalised mug
This is a great one for the youngest of children! We made these at our Playgroup last year with kids aged 0-5 and each and every one turned out beautifully. Grab a white ceramic mug from Kmart ($1!), and then using stickers or sticky tape, tape up your design on the mug. Using Sharpies, let the kids go nuts decorating their mugs. Once done, remove your stickers to reveal the final design. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 180 degrees to make sure the design is there to stay.
The bookmark
If you have a reader in the family, try this cute bookmark idea! Take a photo of your child with their hands clasped together above their head. Print it out, laminate it (cheats laminate – use clear packing tape!) and cut around the body. Pop a hole in at their hands and tie a bit of string or leather strap and your present is done.
The sentimental gift
Capture this moment in time with your child by getting them to do a Father’s Day interview. Set them up somewhere so you can video them, and ask them to answer some questions. Send the video to Dad on Father’s Day for an extra sweet memory.
